| History | ||||
In 1764, it was in Adlington that some of the first British Muslins were woven which dramatically altered ladies fashion as they could now wear light attractive gowns which could be easily cleaned. You can download an 1845 map of Adlington by clicking here (large file) Adlington, like so many villages in the area has grown up around the cotton and mining trades, so most property in the area was originally built to house the local workers at the mills.
|
With the construction of the Leeds and Liverpool canal, trade and industry grew and it was discovered that Adlington's springs were ideal for mixing dies, so a whole dying and block printing of cotton industry grew in the area (and still exists today). The textile industry continued to grow until the 1930's when the mills closed.
