Abbey Village

Abbey Village is a very quaint, small village found nearby Withnell and Brinscall. It is well known for its rows of traditional black cottages. Open farmland surrounds the villages with beautiful views either over to Withnell or towards Darwen tower.

Time really does seem to have forgotten Abbey Village, there is a great sense of traditional village values still present, the village itself is well presented, in the summer months, bright colourful hanging baskets appear throughout, and during the winter months, the surrounding country side is totally blanked out by the snow.

  History

It is thought that Abbey Village got its name from nearby Whalley Abbey. As with the surrounding villages of Withnell and Brinscall, Abbey village first started out as a farming community.

In fairly recent years the village has seen many changes. After the second world war the decline of local employment and manufacturing occurred as with the surrounding villages. The village's mill closed, but still remains today as a reminder of the past.

As you can see from this picture of Abbey Village walking day, the main structure and character of Abbey Village has hardly changed at all compared to other local villages.
